Do You Have a Dingy Smile? | Dumas Dentist

459899307If you find that you have become obsessed with having a bright white smile, you are not alone. The problem is that many of our lifestyle choices prevent us from having the gleaming white grins we all crave. It is then that we give in and head over to our local Dumas dentist for a whitening treatment. In fact, this cosmetic procedure is so common in dental offices because we place such a high value on the appearance of our smiles. According to an American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey:

  • Virtually all adults (99.7%) believe a smile is an important social asset. 96% of adults believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex
  • Three-quarters (74%) of adults feel an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chance for career success
  • The most common response for a wanted improvement was whiter, brighter teeth

There are many different ways to whiten your teeth, both naturally and over-the-counter, but professional tooth whitening in a dental office is of course the preferred whitening method. The best whitening systems are used in your dentist’s office and your teeth can literally brighten up to ten shades in typically about an hour. In-office whitening is typically focused on the front eight teeth and is a great jump start for take-home whitening, which is a part of an effective whitening program. The advantage is that tooth whitening can last for one or more years, depending on how well you take care of your teeth, and especially if you’re using a home whitening product for regular maintenance.

Uh Oh…It Looks Like You Need a Root Canal | Dumas Dentist

dental treatment

You go to your appointment, expecting the usual routine checkup. But for some reason, this time it’s different. This time the dentist tells you that you need a root canal.

Typically performed by endodontists, root canals are dental procedures that focus on treating the inside of the tooth to save the outside of the tooth. But, what exactly happens inside your mouth that causes the need for a root canal? Beneath the white enamel that coats the tooth, and the hard layer – known as dentin – that gives the tooth it’s structure is a soft pulp containing blood vessels and nerves that both provide nutrients to the tooth during development. As you age, the pulp can become inflamed or infected due to causes such as deep decay, cracked teeth, or even repeated dental procedures. If the pulp becomes infected, it can be the cause of significant pain, even potentially causing abscesses over time.

A dentist will typically make a recommendation for root canal if they determine that the pulp is negatively impacted. For patients, though, some signs that a root canal may be required include severe pain (especially when chewing, or when pressure is applied to the tooth), tooth discoloration, swelling and tenderness to the nearby gums, or a crack so severe that pulp material can be seen or felt. While these symptoms are signs you may need a root canal, it’s also possible that deep decay can require a root canal without causing any symptoms at all.

Dental Implants: What You Need to Know | Dumas Dentist

dental treatment

Do you have a cracked tooth, severe cavity, or a tooth damaged by physical trauma such as a fall? While it’s possible that your tooth may not be able to be saved, modern dentistry has a number of options that look and feel like a natural tooth, and one of the most common solutions for teeth that can’t be saved is the dental implant.

Dental implants are a combination of procedures that work together to provide a fake tooth for patients. Dental implants are popular choices for dentists because they tend to last a very long time, have a high success rate, can be used for treating a wide variety of serious problems, and provide a replacement tooth that is almost indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Dental implants are popular among patients because the implant looks and feels like a tooth, implants do not require special cleaning like bridges, and they do not need to be removed nightly like dentures.

Implants consist of three primary components:

  • A titanium post screwed into the bone of the tooth socket
  • A titanium extension post is attached to the screw base and provides a socket for the crown
  • A dental crown – often porcelain – is attached to the middle titanium post

Properly cared for, a dental implant may last for decades – 30 years, or more. If you have a tooth that is damaged, or if you believe a dental implant may be right for you, ask your dentist about implants. The procedure takes time, but is a great solution for severely damaged teeth.
